We are very proud to announce the Government of Canada as SET’s new country partner for the upcoming round in 2017-2018. Through this partnership, we will strengthen the existing SET network in North America and will boost innovation in the field of sustainable energy solutions. We are honored that The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Canadian Ambassador to Germany and Special Envoy to the European Union and Europe, will be part of the SET 2018 launch on November 14th at COP23 in Bonn, and present the newly-formed partnership. Furthermore, Ambassador Dion will join our international jury of experts who will choose the finalists of the upcoming SET Award, and will get the chance to present their ideas and visions at the SET Tech Festival, taking place next April.
The partnership will make it possible to include three outstanding Canadian start-ups at the Tech Festival, who will represent Canada’s renewable energy entrepreneurs in Berlin. To select these start-ups, we plan to hold a satellite event in Montréal, a prominent innovation point in Canada, with the additional aim of strengthening the local ecosystem in this field. The partnership will also encourage Canadian start-ups to apply for the SET Award and be internationally recognized for their achievements.
The Canadian cooperation with SET follows a series of steps taken by the federal government to strengthen existing efforts to move the country towards cleaner technologies, which include renewable energies. This fall, the Government of Canada announced $21.9 billion over the next 11 years dedicated to green infrastructure. This will include targeted investments to support greenhouse gas reductions and enable greater climate change adaptation and increased resilience. This investment will also support the attraction of capital investments necessary to transition Canada’s electricity system towards 90 percent non-emitting by 2030 (Source: Government of Canada).
